Social networking can be a fun thing to do, but more importantly is a way to increase the presence of your internet home business or any online business. It is a development that has seen extraordinary growth in recent years and shows no signs of tapering off. And the chief benefit of it is that you can social network without spending a single penny of your marketing budget.

There are many ways that can be used for your social networking strategy, but there is one tip that trumps them all: Focus!

The first thing you need to do is to choose your social networks with care.  If you have done even a preliminary search for related social networking website, you will quickly discover that there are hundreds that can you could use.  Take some time, make a list, and start comparing.  It is important to focus on only a limited number of social networking sites instead of taking the shotgun approach and doing only a little bit of work with every site.

In order to choose which social networking sites are best for you, there are some standard criteria that you should follow.  Here is a quick look at what your starting criteria should be: relevancy, time, and infuence.

Relevancy is simple enough.  Your social networking sites need to have a  direct relationship  to your niche (exclusions to this rule can be made for major sites such as Facebook, Ning, MySpace, Twitter, etc)

Time refers to how much time you need to commit to getting your profile established.  Additionally, time refers to the average amount of time that needs to be delegated to your profile in order to make it useful.  For example, if you are using twitter, tweeting only once or twice a week will not do much good.  However, on slower moving social networking sites, posting once or twice a week is more than enough.

Infuence relates to how much a quality profile is actually worth, how it will draw. This includes things like how many people you can get to follow you, how useful any links that you use will be to boost your website, etc. If you set up an optimum profile, but no one sees it, it doesn’t matter how good it is.

As with all aspects of Internet marketing, if you do not make good decisions to begin with, you will end up wasting a lot of time and effort with nothing to show for it. There are a number of social networking tips that you can use to maximize your experience, however one social networking tip should be considered more of a rule and that is to focus on choosing the right social networks to join.
